LO 1 Understanding 3D modelling techniques

P1) Modelling Process:

Explain three modelling techniques used to create and modify 3D geometry.

a) What is a polygon and how is it used in the modelling process in Maya?


b) What is the process of extruding Maya geometry and how is it used in 3D environment creation?


c)  Explain how lights affect a 3D environment in changing a geometry textured surface. Give three examples relating to three different environments.


d) Explain in one page how 3D models are used in games, animations and live action films.

Create a word document/Info graphic/Indesign report explaining the four above elements.

Create an analysed report, approximately a page and half with relevant images for each question.

Polygons. A)

Polygons consist of geometry based on vertices, edges, and faces that you can use to create three-dimensional models in Maya.

Polygons are useful for constructing many types of 3D models and are widely used in the development of 3D content for animated effects in film, interactive video games, and the internet.




Start to  put together your explanation of what a polygon is, how they are used, mesh polygons and use all the polygon terminology you can. Faces, vertices, edges etc. 







Extrude a polygon face, edge, or vertex. B)







You can add polygons to an existing mesh by extruding polygon faces, edges, or vertices using the Extrude command.

You should create a step by step guide to show how you extrude a polygon face in Maya and where and why this process would be used. Use examples as well as diagrams.

Use the Maya tutorial website to help you with the step by step guide, however you need to expand on this.

Explain how lights affect a 3D environment in changing a geometry textured surface. Give 3 examples relating to 3 different environments. 

Research into all the variations of light and how they can affect various environments, start to think about three different environments, could be film, games such as Fallout 4 etc. 













Models in Games, Films etc. D)


Explain on one page how 3D models are used in games, animations and live action films.

Why do we use models? how are they used in superhero films, Possibly to create an augmented reality?
